Austria is famous for many things, great and small, beautiful and ugly, but here at Hafele Bread, we are concerned only with one of its wonderful attributes: the tradition of exquisite artisan bread that you will fail to find anywhere else in the world. a taste of which we have brought to
Los Angeles, California.
Every Austrian region, and even many a family, has its own specialties to offer, from rich and juicy rye to fluffy wheat, the varieties are vast, but it is what they have in common that distinguishes Austrian bread: they’re all strong in character and rich in flavour through patient and diligent preparation that renders any sacrilegious use of artificial enhancements unnecessary.
Bread to us isn’t just bread, a thing to hold your topping. although some fresh butter from grass fed cows, a bit of original Speck or spicy Bergkäse will be an exquisite accompaniment, our bread on its own is a delight and is sure to linger as a mouth watering memory.
This is no coincidence, of course, but the consequence of love for the craft and the art of making bread. Good things take time, and one such good thing is a Hafele Family Loaf, a token of Austrian tradition, Earth’s treasures turned into a poem of flavours.

Hafele Bread is a small artisan family business run by Peter Hafele & Hope Golds. It was founded by the two hafele brothers, Peter and Paul, who grew up in a small town in the heart of Austria, where, amidst wafts of fresh bread and pastries from grandmother’s kitchen to local artisan bakeries, they have come to love, distinguish and learn to prepare the very best.
For many years they visited the Golden State, one of their favourite destinations – not least to rock n roll in the clubs of los angeles with their band Tantric Cycle – and now their second home. Along with them they brought their handed down family recipes, a delightful and very personal piece of Austrian tradition.
